Term 2

English

In term 2 we will be reading and responding to the story ‘How to be Viking’  by Cressida Cowell.  We will also start to explore some non fiction texts which will be linked to our topic on the Vikings.  Some students will learn about the key features of non chronological reports and practice finding and writing about factual information.  Others will learn about writing and matching captions to pictures. Towards the end of term we will link our literacy learning to Christmas, particularly focusing on following and writing instructional texts.

In addition to linking work to our terms story, students will also have regular opportunities to practice their reading, handwriting and fine motor skills, including regular use of our clever finger activities and weekly handwriting sessions.

MATHS
In Term 2, all students will focus on measures, measuring to the nearest cm and weighing to the nearest kg. They will practice in a variety of practical ways as well as learning how to read and write number on different equipment such as a ruler and weighing scales. As well as measures they will be learning about money and how to use it functionally in everyday life as well as recognising coins and notes.  We will start each lesson with a song about numbers to help them learn their number facts. You can hear this terms song by clicking the link below.

TOPIC

This term we will continue our topic ‘Viking Invasion.’ Now that students have an understanding of what life was like for Vikings many years ago, they will now learn about how and why the Vikings traveled to new places in their long boats and fought battles with their helmets, swords and shields.  Students will engage in a variety of practical sessions to make their own boats and helmets. Students will also have the opportunity to cook and taste Viking food. This will include different bread they made as well as stews they may have eaten. This fun song has helped us remember many facts about the Vikings.
